SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Something needs to change.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlthough there are a number of factors contributing to stress\, the way we RESPOND to stress has a big impact on our health and well-being. \nWe each have a hardwired ‘stress response system’ is that prepares us to deal with stress with fight\, flight or freeze.  When activated over a long period of time\, this system depletes us on every level. The effect of long-term stress is known as allostatic load\, resulting in greater risk of heart disease\, osteoporosis and metabolic syndrome. \nSelf-compassion is another way. Rather than fighting or fleeing threatening situations (and the thoughts and feelings that go with them)\, self-compassion involves learning to embrace our difficulties and being kind to ourselves in the face of them. \nSelf-compassion involves three components:\n1) accepting whatever pressure we’re under and the unpleasant feelings and thoughts that come with it;\n2) putting our stress into perspective (ie\, acknowledging that stress and pressure are a part of work and living\, and that the current issue is not – and need not – be the end of the world); and\n3) moving forward with an attitude of openness and kindness to our circumstances and to ourselves. \nSelf-compassion means learning to mindfully accept our circumstances\, thoughts and feelings\, and then responding with kindness – the way we typically respond to those we care about who are suffering. \nThat’s not to say that someone with self-compassion can’t take a tough decision\, take a stand or back out of a dysfunctional environment. \nSelf-compassion is about the way we relate to our experience – not the content of it. And it turns out to be a pretty powerful tool when faced with stress: Researchers have found that people with high levels of self-compassion experience less anxiety\, stress\, depression and shame; and more life satisfaction\, happiness\, gratitude and optimism. \nBut does that make self-compassionate people less focused on doing well? You might expect that self-compassionate people lose their ‘edge’ and their drive to succeed? \nNot so\, says the research. The opposite is actually true: People with high levels of self-compassion take more of a learning approach to their challenges\, take greater responsibility and are more accountable for their choices than those low in self-compassion. \nWhy? Because a stressful deadline presents a HUGE threat to someone who stakes their whole identity on it. Taking responsibility and ‘owning’ one’s performances is also a big threat if you’re tough on yourself. You’ve got much more to lose. Being self-compassionate ‘frees up’ critical mental and emotional energy that can be used to actually solve the problem at hand (rather than just stressing about it). And if you fail\, it’s not the end of the world. So you’ll be more likely to stand up and take responsibility. \nPeople with self-compassion are much better placed to look \n

SUMMARY:Mindful Self-Compassion 8 week Training Nanaimo
DESCRIPTION:        \nThe Centre for Compassion Inspired Health teaches Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) – an empirically-supported\, 8-week\, training program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. Based on the groundbreaking research of Kristin Neff and the clinical expertise of Christopher Germer\, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness\, care and understanding. \nThe three key components of self-compassion are self-kindness\, a sense of common humanity\, and balanced\, mindful awareness. \nKindness opens our hearts to suffering\, so we can give ourselves what we need. Common humanity opens us to our essential interrelatedness\, so that we know we aren’t alone. Mindfulness opens us to the present moment\, so we can accept our experience with greater ease. Together they comprise a state of warm-hearted\, connected presence. \nSelf-compassion can be learned by anyone\, even those who didn’t receive enough affection in childhood or who feel uncomfortable when they are good to themselves. It’s a courageous attitude that stands up to harm\, including the harm that we unwittingly inflict on ourselves through self-criticism\, self-isolation\, or self-absorption. \nSelf-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience\, allows us to admit our shortcomings\, motivate ourselves with kindness\, forgive ourselves when needs\, relate wholeheartedly to others\, and be more authentically ourselves. \nRapidly expanding research demonstrates that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well being\, less anxiety\, depression and stress\, maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise\, and satisfying personal relationships. And it’s easier than you think. \nAfter participating in this workshop\, you’ll be able to: \n\nPractice self-compassion in daily life\nUnderstand the empirically-supported benefits of self-compassion\nMotivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism\nHandle difficult emotions with greater ease\nTransform challenging relationships\, old and new\nManage caregiver fatigue\nPractice the art of savouring and self-appreciation\n\nProgram activities include meditation\, short talks\, experiential exercises\, group discussion\, and home practices. MSC is a workshop rather than a retreat. The goal is for participants to directly experience self-compassion and learn practices that evoke self-compassion in daily life. \nMSC is primarily a compassion training program rather than mindfulness training like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, although mindfulness is the foundation of self-compassion. MSC is also not psychotherapy insofar as the emphasis of MSC is on building emotional resources rather than addressing old wounds. Positive change occurs naturally as we develop the capacity to be with ourselves in a kinder\, more compassionate way. \nIt is said that “love reveals everything unlike itself.”  While some difficult emotions may arise when practicing self-compassion\, we are committed to providing a safe\, supportive environment for this process to unfold\, and to making the journey interesting and enjoyable for everyone. \nMSC includes 8 weekly sessions of 2 1/2 hours each\, in addition to a 4-hour retreat. Prior to registering\, participants should plan to attend every session and practice mindfulness and self-compassion at least 30 minutes per day throughout the program. \nFee for 24 hours of training $425.00 plus GST.\nSave your spot and register before January 1st\, 2017 Early bird registration fee is $375.00 plus GST.\n \nREGISTER FOR MINDFUL SELF-COMPASSION 8 WEEK TRAINING \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Mindful Self-Compassion
DESCRIPTION:“Actually\, when bad things happen to us\, we tend to have three unfortunate reactions:\nself-criticism\, self-isolation\, and self-absorption.\nSelf-compassion can direct us exactly in the opposite direction:\nself-kindness\, recognizing the common humanity in our experience\, and a balanced approach to negative emotions.” \nChristopher K. Germer\,\nThe Mindful Path to Self-Compassion:\nFreeing Yourself from Destructive Thoughts and Emotions \nStart the New Year with a different relationship with yourself.  \nLearn how to include yourself in your big heart.  \nStop abandoning yourself emotionally. \nLearn skills that can transform health and well-being. \n\n\n\n\nCurious about self-compassion? Wondering what all the fuss is about?\nThinking that maybe there is a kinder way to be with yourself? To have your own back – emotionally?\nOver 400 studies have shown that mindfulness and self-compassion practice reduce anxiety\, stress\, burnout and shame while improving health and well-being. \nThis introductory session will offer you an opportunity to dip your toe into the world of self-compassion. You will learn practices that you can take home and begin to use immediately for yourself – and others. \n\nSelf-compassion is a courageous mental attitude that stands up to harm—the harm that we inflict on ourselves every day by overworking\,overeating\, overanalyzing\, and overreacting. \nIt helps us recognize when we’re under stress face what’s happening in our lives (mindfulness)  and take a kinder approach to life’s challenges. \n\nThe location of this session on Sunday January 8th has been changed.  Space is limited.\n\nIf interested\, please contact Victoria directly at victoria@compassioninspiredhealth.com\nor 2507130806.\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mindful Self-Compassion 8 Week Intensive
DESCRIPTION:Self-compassion is a skill that can be learned by anyone\, even those who didn’t receive enough affection in childhood or who find it embarrassing to be kind to themselves. Self-compassion is a courageous mental attitude that stands up to harm—the harm that we inflict on ourselves every day by overworking\, overeating\, overanalyzing\, and overreacting.\n\nWith mindful self-compassion\, we’re better able to recognize when we’re under stress and face what’s happening in our lives (mindfulness) and to take a kinder and more sustainable approach to life’s challenges. Self-compassion gives emotional strength and resilience\, allowing us to recover more quickly from bruised egos to admit our shortcomings\, forgive ourselves\, and respond to ourselves and others with care and respect. After all\, making mistakes is part of being human.\n\nSelf-compassion also provides the support and inspiration required to make necessary changes in our lives and reach our full potential.\n\nMindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an empirically-supported\, 8-week training program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. Based on the groundbreaking research of Kristin Neff and the clinical expertise of Christopher Germer\, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness\, care and understanding. \nFacilitators: \nVictoria Pawlowski\, RD.\,M.Ed.\, RCC and Carolena Ranger\, MA.\, RD.\nTrained Teachers of Mindful Self-Compassion \nRegister Now for Early Bird Rate \nThis 24 hour course includes 8 sessions plus a 1/2 day silent retreat.and is a prerequisite course for the Mindful Self-Compassion Teachers Training. \n

SUMMARY:Lateral Kindness\, Grace and Sustainable Compassion
DESCRIPTION:– experiential skill building workshop for cultivating and sustaining compassion for ourselves\,our colleagues and the world\nAs health professionals\, we have the privilege of hearing people’s stories and witnessing their journey through difficult times with food\, nutrition\, health\, and healing. Transforming this conversation into a dialogue that maintains our professional credibility\, is grounded in lateral kindness and corrects inequities in power\, requires many skills. To hear and deeply honour others\, we need to be grounded in kindness\, have open hearts\, understand common humanity and have tools to manage our own reactions and triggers. \n\nThis experiential pre-conference workshop will focus on: \n– cultivating compassionate vs competitive mindset\n– caring for self while engaging and caring for others\n– managing stress and preventing burnout\n– handling difficult emotions with greater ease\n– transforming challenging relationships with lateral kindness\n– motivating self with kindness instead of criticism or competition\n– understanding the research and brain science behind self-compassion\n– teaching mindful self-compassion skills we can offer to others \nVictoria Pawlowski RD.\, M.Ed (U.Toronto)\, RCC.\, and\nCarolena Ranger\, MA\, RD\, CAM (Royal Roads)\,\nCo-founders of The Centre for Compassion Inspired Health\nTrained Teachers of Mindful Self-Compassion.   \n\n\n  \n  \nStories\, Science and the Social:  6th Critical Dietetics Conference\, Granada\, Spain\nCritical Dietetics originated as a movement in June 2009 and while it is located in dietetics\, it also embraces multiple disciplines and perspectives. \nThe 6th Critical Dietetics Conference will encourage exploration of the role stories and silences play in shaping the complex links between clinical practice\, community health\, and ideological agendas. The following questions only begin to articulate the conversations emerging: \n\nHow do the stories we tell individually and collectively influence what makes the “food and nutrition” map and what falls outside it?\nHow far can we talk about our own U-turns and failures as a source of knowledge and wisdom?\nCan tangled personal-political\, creative\, spiritual and embodied perspectives find a place in knowledge creation without jeopardizing professional credibility?\nHow can we receive other’s responses so that sharing stories is liberating rather than stifling?\nIn what ways can we use stories to create room for bringing more of the situated self into practice\, inquiry\, and teaching?\nHow might we talk about our emotional\, spiritual\, and embodied selves in ways that shed light on power in order to address inequity and correct privilege\, thus ensuring a diverse dietetic profession?\nHow might we put to words/story/music practitioners’ struggles with the emotional and embodied aspects of our work?\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Prevent Burnout & Manage Stress with Foundation Skills Training in Mindfulness & Self-Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Lateral Kindness and Sustainable Compassion requires us to learn to include ourselves in our circle of compassion. Otherwise we burn out and get irritable\, crabby\, depressed and frustrated.\nSustainable Compassion can be learned.  It starts with coming back to ourselves.  Tuning in.  Connecting with how we too are suffering at times while witnessing\, caring for and supporting others. \nThis skill building workshop will teach practical skills that will help participants \n\n\nremain calm and caring in challenging situations\ncultivate self-kindness\nhandle difficult emotions with greater ease\ntransform challenging relationships\ncare for self while caring for others\nuse kindness as a motivator instead of criticism\n\n\nParticipation in this workshop is limited to staff of Lil’Wat Nation.\n If you are interested in scheduling a workshop for your organization\,\nplease contact us at info@compassioninspiredhealth.com 250.754.0806. \n  \n\nEvaluations from April 27th\, 2016\nWorkshop with Lil’Wat Health and Healing \n\nThank you for your good words and tools and for your gentle way to deal with suffering for ourselves and others and the dance of life. I will use these tools every day because we dance with ourselves and others every day. This was a great presentation\, gentle\, kind and compassionate. \n\nThe workshop was very good. I loved the ‘One Breath for Me\, One Breath for You’ exercise because it reminds me that I don’t have to fix everything. The workshop had a nice safe feeling. I am happy you had a ‘rover’ to help keep the room safe and balanced with a loving eye. \n\nI loved everything about this workshop. I loved the ‘laid back’ facilitation of such deep material. I loved getting the opportunity to practice the different stages/types of self-care meditation. This was healing and therapeutic. If I am healthy\, I can help others be healthier by sharing good healing energy. Thank you for sharing this life-changing technique of learning to love myself like I deserve. \n\nI enjoyed the part where we had a visit from ‘a compassionate friend’ to listen to us and tell us that things are all good. I needed that visit from my great grandmother to ground me\, to make me realize everything is alright. We started to sing a hmm together in our language\, which was my grounding. \n\nI loved everything about this workshop. Thank you. \n\nI loved that it is ok to think of self first. I matter and I am good enough. I suggest more feedback from the group to go in the ‘parking lot’. \n\nI loved the practical ways we learned to practice self-compassion and why it is not selfish to do that. \n\nI loved the message. It’s a huge deal to be told to put yourself first. My favorite activity was the ‘Compassionate Listening’. It was great. Thanks. \nI loved that this workshop was about ‘self’ because I always need to work on self-compassion. \n\nI loved the whole workshop. It is always good to learn and have more tools to work with. I needed to learn how to have compassion and love for myself. I suggest having a microphone for participants so we could hear what others were saying. \n\nI loved that this workshop gives people permission to take time to care for themselves. I would have liked more movement and physical exercises. \n\nGood presentation\, well-paced\, knowledgeable facilitators. Wonderful\, acknowledging inspirational content. This is good for everybody to hear and experience again and again. May think about making this a 2 day workshop to give time for participants to get a real firm grasp of the material. \n\nSorry but I use a different method. This may work but I found something else that works for me. What works for some\, doesn’t work for everyone. \n\nI needed this. Thank you for everything you taught me. \nI loved the clarity and how we participated in all activities. I understand more and feel like I’ m not alone. Continue with your good work. \n\nIt is time to address the issue of self-compassion. I am my worst critic. I can remember and recall all of the bad. It seems like I am the one that keeps bringing it all up. No one else knows. It’s time to let it go and love myself. \n\nI loved the time to be here and the sharing because it opened up space for healing. \n\nI enjoyed the gentleness and not being pressured to do anything that is uncomfortable for self. I don’t like being pressured and I am sure I am not alone. \n\nI loved just being together with everyone because I hardly see everyone as I usually work when they all go home. I loved learning self-love\, inner voice\, that I am not alone and that there are a lot of similar feelings for everyone. \nI loved learned about Sustainable Compassion and understanding what it is. It gives me another tool to use in my life and with others. \n\nI loved learning some techniques for listening and learning that I don’t have to ‘fix’ everything I hear from everyone I speak with. \n\nThis workshop was all helpful. I loved having the chance to learn new tools and to care for myself in a good and positive way.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness & Self-Compassion Foundation Skills Training
DESCRIPTION:If your compassion doesn’t include yourself\, it is not complete.  Jack Kornfield\, author and meditation teacher \nIt can seem impossible to both care for others who are suffering and care for ourselves. \nBut there is a way.  Mindfulness and Self-Compassion practices have been proven to protect against compassion and caregiver fatigue while building resiliency within ourselves. \nThis one day program will provide you with some of the skills and practices from the Mindful Self-Compassion Program developed by Dr.Christopher Germer (Harvard) and Dr. Kristin Neff (Texas).Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) – an empirically-supported training program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. \nThe research has been exploding the past 20 years and found a strong positive association between mindfulness and self-compassion with reduced anxiety\, depression\, stress\, perfectionism and burnout\, while at the same time increasing feelings of life satisfaction\, healthy behaviours and overall well-being. \nThe goal of this workshop is for participants to have an opportunity to directly experience mindfulness and self-compassion.  You will leave with a toolkit of practices that can help you cultivate more compassion in your life for yourself and others. You will learn how to motivate yourself with kindness\, instead of self-criticism; how to regulate difficult emotions\, have your own back when stressed or overwhelmed and treat yourself with the same care and kindness you offer to those you love.   Register Now \n  \nComments from past participant:\n“I loved the content and the way it was taught.  Short talks\, videos\, guided meditations and reflections made this learning profoundly immediate and doable.  Thank you for creating such a warm and safe space to learn mindfulness and self-compassion. The tone of your voices embodied kindness and caring.” \nfor more feedback from past participants see Testimonials
